Cycle amongthe finest lakes of the South Island on this 7 day cycling tour as we travel from Christchurch to Queenstown. Ride alongside the stunning turquoise lakes of Tekapo and Pukaki, follow the Waitaki River & its lakes to the coast before finishing at the impressive Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown. On this tour you will make friends with New Zealand folks, discover the grandeur of walking beneath Aoraki Mt Cook - New Zealand’s highest peak, explore the beautiful stone buildings of Victorian Oamaru and ride through the dramatic scenery of Central Otago

Day 1 - Welcome to Christchurch: one of the world’s most exciting cities as it emerges from the rebuild of the 2010 earthquakes.  We strongly suggest you to arrive two days prior of departure date to allow time to explore the city.  We will collect you from your inner city accommodation and bring you to our depot for a briefing and bike fitting and then it’s off in our coach heading south to the start of our first ride.  Quiet rural roads take us through small communities and then onto a beautiful winery where we have a delightful lunch.  Then it’s off again through the limestone landscape and a final drive into the beautiful Lake Tekapo, famous for its turquoise color.

Day 2 - Aoraki / Mt Cook is our highest mountain towering over 3000m above the tussock plains of the Mackenzie Basin.  We drive across to Lake Pukaiki and then up to the alpine village at its base and here we take a beautiful 3 hour hike into the Hooker Valley and back with lunch at a café hosting amazing views of the Southern Alps.  All good things come to an end and then it’s on our bikes and the 58 km ride down the lakeside with an optional extension beside the canals.  Eventually it is time for loading up and a short drive into Omarama, the gliding capital of the Southern Hemisphere.

Day 3  - Between Omarama and Oamaru on the coast are beautifully sealed roads and stunning scenery.  Down the Waitaki Valley we pass small towns and amazing limestone scenery.  Oamaru is famous for its historic Victorian Quarter.  We will ride the best of this valley and coach between rides to finally enter the city and onto our accommodation.

Day 4 -  Heading south of the city we have a beautiful morning ride along the coast. Heading  inland we cycle another quiet limestone flanked gorge with a kick in the tail before continuing onto the small rural town of Palmerston.   To make the next sector more enjoyable we drive to a highpoint on the rolling tops above the Maniototo Basin passing NZ’s largest goldmine along the way. The option then is a fast long descent into Hyde and then a further ride for those who have the legs over and onto the roads leading to Nasby and a spa pool finish.  Nearby, the sport of curling is based and if you wish to try your hand at indoor ice bowls, grab a jacket and join us.

Day 5  - The network of rural backroads lead us through Central Otago and the many small towns that are regenerating courtesy of the nearby Rail Trail.  This has bought new prosperity to the region and its success has spawned an extensive network of 23 trails throughout NZ as the country reinvents itself as an international cycle destination.  Our ride takes us towards the Clutha River, famous for its early gold mining and our accommodation is in an historic area of Clyde.

Day 6  - Nearing the end of our cycle trip, today is a short riding option, selected to suit the prevailing winds and weather.  Leading into the Southern Lakes district, Lake Hawea and Wanaka provide photographic foregrounds to magic photos.  We will reach Lake Wanaka Township in the early afternoon in time for lunch by the lake front and a free afternoon to explore.

Day 7 - Across over the Crown Range is the Wakatipu Basin and the historic  Arrowtown.  The gradual uphill of the Cardronna Valley has a fitting kick with a 5 kms climb to the summit which provides amazing views in all directions.  We cycle in the Cardrona valley to historic hotel, then climb over the Crown Range and descend into Arrowtown, ending the trip in Queenstown. Morning break provides the fuel for the climb and then a finale downhill through the zig zags and finally into Arrowtown for a late lunch followed by a transfer to our accommodation in nearby Queenstown and a final celebration dinner.

Day 8 - Queenstown is a stunning base for a wide range of adventures so if you have some more time, no better base to find.

Our trip ends after breakfast. We can arrange an airport transfer for those traveling home that day.
